A little belated but never too late when it comes to Barbra Streisand’s dog, is honoring Babs’ pooch Samantha as The Jet Set Pet of the Month. The entertainer brought her adorable Coton de Tulear on her European summer tour, which included Streisand’s first visit to Israel as well as London, Amsterdam, Cologne and Berlin.
Babs also takes Samantha on road trips and says, “I would never leave her.” In Israel, Samantha was welcomed at the legendary King David Jerusalem, where Babs stayed four nights in the Royal Suite, and the Dan Tel Aviv, where the Academy Award winner also checked into the Royal Suite. Being Barbra Streisand’s dog comes with many privileges, such as staying in the best suites and traveling in a private plane. But Samantha travels in a truck too.
“I love road trips!” she told Gill Pringle of The Independent earlier this year. “My husband and I love that. We bought a truck with a bench seat so we could put the dog in the middle. I have a coton. She’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. She’s like the daughter I never had. She speaks English. She understands English I swear to God. She’ll come up to me and go ‘mmm’ it sounds like a baby. That means she wants water. Or she’ll just look at me with those eyes and then she wants a treat. She always comes with us. I would never leave her.”
Babs received Samantha as a gift from hubby James Brolin for their fifth wedding anniversary. (They wed on July 1, 1998.) And the pooch was named after Streisand’s late Bichon Frise, Sammy, the inspiration for the singer’s special interpretation of the song “Smile,” which was adopted as an anthem by The Humane Society of the United States.
Longtime Streisand fans will remember Sadie, a gift from the cast of her Broadway musical hit “Funny Girl” back in the 1960′s, who once adorned the covers of Life magazine and Streisand’s Songbird album. Samantha is no stranger to the spotlight. She was featured on the cover of Streisand’s book My Passion for Design, which was released in 2010 and focuses on the architecture and construction of her newest homes. And when Samantha was just a few months old, she appeared on “Oprah” in 2003.
Streisand is the only artist ever to receive an Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, National Medal of Arts and Peabody Awards as well as France’s Legion d’Honneur and the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. And little Samantha can boast that she received an award from The Jet Set Pets.
A special thanks to Peter Halmagyi for allowing The Jet Set Pets to use his photo of Barbra Streisand’s dog Samantha and Babs.
Does your pampered pet have what it takes to be a jet set pet of the month? If so, send us a one or two photos of your pet in “travel mode” along with a few lines telling us where your pet has been to firstname.lastname@example.org. Your coddled canine, fine feline or other furry friend could be featured here like Barbra Streisand’s dog Samantha, Uggie, who stole the show in the movie The Artist, Giggy, who steals his mom Lisa Vanderpump’s show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or Aleister, whose mom Dita von Teese steals the hearts of men when she performs.
