Boo, once deemed the world’s cutest dog by Khloe Kardashian, is not only cuddly but charitable too. The famous Pomeranian with the puppy cut and 8.3 million Facebook followers today hosted a red carpet send-off for nine homeless Chihuahuas who traveled from San Francisco to Newark (no jokes please) in style on Virgin America as part of the airline’s Operation Chihuahua Airlift. The shelter dogs hope to find loving homes in the New York area in time for Thanksgiving. All 10 pups are The Jet Set Pets of the Month for November.
The Jet Set Pets were on hand at San Francisco International Airport’s Terminal 2 to watch Boo, Virgin America’s Official Pet Liaison, host the early morning event that showcased the fifth Operation Chihuahua Airlift, where the airline teams up with the City of San Francisco Animal Care and Control to fly the furry friends east. The nine pawsengers were to be received at Newark by the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), which will place the little dogs in loving adoptive homes.
The overpopulation of Chihuahuas in California continues to force animal shelters on the West Coast to look to shelters on the East Coast for help. New York City is ideal because of the huge number of apartment dwellers who favor small pooches.
“‘They’re in high demand on the east coast so we’re very fortunate that we have this partnership where we can get them into homes very, very quickly,” said Rebecca Katz, Director of the City of San Francisco Animal Care and Control. “Unfortunately there is a huge overpopulation of Chihuahuas here on the West Coast. Probably about a third of the dogs in our shelter are Chihuahua mixes. We urge people to spay and neuter.”
As the only San Francisco-based airline, Virgin America first teamed up with the SF ACC to fly needy pups to new homes on the East Coast in 2010 to help address the influx of dogs at shelters on the West Coast. The overpopulation issue has only escalated since the 2010 airlifts. The airline is asking Bay Area residents to help the cause by visiting their local shelter or making a donation to the SF ACC at: .
There were cupcakes and “Chi-mosa” champagne cocktails at the gate for bipeds. The pups had a chance to mingle, snack on dog treats and play with toys at the gate before walking the red carpet to begin their journey, escorted by Virgin America teammate volunteers. “They will of course be upgraded en route to Newark to our Main Chihuahua Select class,” said John MacLeod, SVP of Planning and Sales at Virgin America.
Virgin America is also asking flyers to post travel photos of their favorite furry companions on Twitter or Instagram with the #VXBark hashtag. The cutest travel critter will win a doggy swag bag containing Boo’s latest book, “Boo: The Life of the World’s Cutest Dog” and Virgin America Swag Shop pet favorites.
