The Grand Wailea resort on Maui is not a pet-friendly hotel but that hasn’t stopped the Waldorf Astoria property from doing something kind for dogs and cats. Spa Grande at Grand Wailea is partnering with the Maui Humane Society to offer a special mahalo (thank you) to Maui visitors who participate in the shelter’s twice-weekly “Helping Paws Visitor Volunteer Program.” The volunteer program is designed for visitors who miss their pets and want to interact with and help homeless animals while vacationing on Maui.
Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., visitors can offer a “helping paw” at the shelter with such activities as walking dogs, bathing puppies, brushing cats, or playing with puppies and kittens—an important part of their socialization.
Visitors participating in this volunteer program will receive a Pampered Paws certificate from Spa Grande, offering 15 percent off any regularly priced spa treatment as a thank you for their volunteer service. (Some restrictions may apply, and the 15% discount cannot be combined with any other offer.) Named one of the “Top 10 Spas in the United States” by Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines, Spa Grande is the largest spa facility in Hawaii, featuring 40 treatment rooms in a luxurious 50,000 square-foot facility. The spa is open to outside guests so if you prefer to stay at a pet-friendly hotel, consider the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea (Wailea), Fairmont Kea Lani (Wailea) or Westin Maui Resort & Spa (in Ka’anapali on the west side of Maui).
If you’d like to bring your pet to Hawaii (Oprah’s dogs travel with her to Hawaii), the Maui Humane Society ( MHS) can also help you with the paperwork to avoid Hawaii’s notorious 120-day quarantine. A direct release program allows you to take your furry friend with you from the airport upon arrival.
The 60-year-old MHS is a private, non-profit organization and the oldest and largest animal welfare agency on the island. As the only agency on Maui that accepts all domestic animals in need, MHS sees approximately 9,000 animals coming through its doors each year. If you’re headed to Maui, why not drop off an item or two to help the shelter, which currently needs:
- A laptop for Vet Staff to use in surgery (New or gently used, please!)
- Air Kennels for Large Dogs for our Wings of Aloha program
- Dog jerky treats (Costco sells them, MHS dogs LOVE them!)
- Easy Walk Harnesses – all sizes (for the MHS Dog Walking Program)
- Cat toy wands
- Canned food for kittens, puppies, cats and dogs
- Guinea pig or rabbit fortified pellet food
- Kong toys for dogs
- Kuranda Beds
- Gift Cards to Home Depot, Lowes, Office Max, Wal-mart, or Ace Hardware
You can drop off the items at the MHS shelter located in central Maui, on the highway between Kihei and Kahului.
