In just over 15 years, one organization has saved hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats. Now the largest no-kill, humane organization in the Midwest, PAWS Chicago (which stands for Pets Are Worth Saving) has decreased the number of homeless pets killed annually in Chicago by nearly 70%, has placed more than 31,000 cats and dogs with new families, and has made it their mission to inform and engage the public and media about the reality of pet homelessness. This is why PAWS Chicago is The Jet Set Pets newest Featured Charity.
While PAWS Chicago houses a state-of-the-art cage-less animal shelter and veterinary clinic, it also boasts many programs that fulfill their humane mission. As a no kill organization, PAWS Chicago only euthanizes a small portion of the pets they bring in, euthanizing only when the animal has an untreatable medical condition or is a threat to the public. Instead of killing the large population of homeless animals, as most shelters do, PAWS Chicago works to stop pet overpopulation at its source by offering free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, targeting low-income neighborhoods that are often a source for homeless dogs and cats. Pets can be taken to the PAWS Chicago Lurie Clinic, or get a visit from the GusMobile, a traveling clinic van that allows the organization to reach these low-income neighborhoods.
In realizing the importance of engaging the community, PAWS Chicago also reaches beyond its shelter doors to find homes for pets by setting up frequent Angels With Tails adoption events at various Chicago locations, and by partnering with corporations who share their same ideals in order to extend the organization’s reach and impact. PAWS Chicago also puts a large emphasis on education by building humane research and training programs to redefine medical practices for animal welfare groups worldwide and works with legislators to raise the standards of care and transparency in animal sheltering.
All this and so much more! It’s no wonder Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent charity evaluator, ranks PAWS Chicago in the top 1% of charities in the nation. And as a nonprofit organization, PAWS Chicago’s survival and expansion depends solely on donations. The organization hosts Chicago’s most exclusive pet event, the Chicago Fur Ball, a black tie gala held in November at the Drake Hotel, as well as the always lively annual Beach Party, where scores of bowwows don beachwear every July to raise funds. You don’t have to wait until these events to make your contribution. You can donate now to PAWS Chicago by visiting its website.
As a humane shelter, a veterinary clinic, an educational institute, and an animal rights activist organization, PAWS Chicago deserves all our applause. Bravo!
