Faux Paw Productions, Inc.™ is the name of artist Debby Carman’s company but her custom ceramic pet art is no faux pas. Carman creates whimsical, one-of-a-kind original pet bowls for dogs and cats that add pizazz to the most boring meals.
Working from her studio in Laguna Beach, Calif., the artist/author/cartoonist designs not just imaginative pet bowls that will make you go “awww” but treat jars, books, plush toys and puppets, paintings and pet-themed products (think platters, cups and pasta bowls) for the home. Even pet urns for cremains are among her offerings.
Her own mother died, leaving her two 38-pound cats, Sunny Cheesepuss and BiggyE. Smalls, who keep her company along with two puppies, Cozy Coquetti, a Maltese/Poodle, and Teddy Confetti, a Biewer.
Carman launched her pet bowl business in 1992 and creates “characters and art from the heart, because everybody smiles and giggles in the same language,” she likes to say. Every pet bowl and other item is uniquely crafted, hand drawn, painted, fired and finish glazed. The result are pet bowls and lots more in a style as distinctively recognizable to Carman’s fans as a Missoni is to a fashionista.
Pet bowls made to order
Carman’s pet bowls aren’t specified just by dog and cat but her dog bowls are broken down by oodles of breeds. In addition to the hundreds of pet bowl offerings on her website, she can also make custom-made products like she did for Lucy, the face of The Jet Set Pets.
Pampered pets on the go can still enjoy eating from Carman’s pet bowls when they travel to certain places. Count the pet-friendly Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel among Carman’s many clients. In addition to designing the delightful flyer for the luxury hotel’s Yappy Hour, she also made the adorable pet bowls The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel provides its four-legged guests.
Other Carman hotel clients include the Hyatt and Newport Resort. And she made 300 pet bowls for the press opening of the hit film Marley & Me. Carman is the leading breed dog trophy artist in the country, having created distinctive trophies for the national Cavalier King Charles, Classic Toy Dog Club, Puli, Pumi, Pug, French Bulldog, Boxer, Bulldog, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Portuguese Water Dog, Welsh Terrier, Fox Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Scottish Terrier, West Highland Terrier, English Spaniel, Curly Coated Retriever, Maltese, Basset Hound, Wheaten Terrier and more.
She’s owned four galleries, including two in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, and authored 15 children’s books in print in many languages all over the world, The Pet Plan and Pet Trust Guide. Hundreds of boutiques across the country, and even in Australia, carry her products, as do websites such as www.bitchnewyork.com, www.doggieclothesline.com and www.mydogcollars.com. Next, look for her licensed products in large retailers such as Hallmark stores.
